Should I Paint My Kitchen Cabinets?

Should I Paint My Kitchen Cabinets?

We’ve been painting homes in the Calgary area for years.  We are asked a lot of questions by homeowners about what they should to with their homes to make dramatic improvements in their homes appearance.  One question we’re often asked is “Should I Paint My Kitchen Cabinets?”.  It’s a good question and one that requires a little bit of thought, so we’ll do our best to answer that question just in case you were wondering too!

According to many studies the average family will spend approximately 13 years in their home.  A little over a decade is long enough to see different design styles come and go and the colors that were once hip and in style might not be all the rage now.  This is also true for the color or finish on your kitchen cabinets.  If you’ve lived in your home for several years and you’ve never done anything with your kitchen then cabinet painting is definitely an update you might want to consider.

If you feel your kitchen is ready for an update and you’d like to change the look and feel of your kitchen cabinetry then there are several questions you should ask before you decide to paint them yourself or hire a painting company to come and do it for you

Should I Replace, Reface or Refinish My Kitchen Cabinets?

Without seeing your kitchen and the condition of the existing cabinets it’s tough to give you an opinion over the Internet but here are a few things to consider when making this decision.

  • What condition are the cabinets in?
  • Are the cabinet frames or boxes in good condition?
  • Do you want the insides of the cabinets painted too?
  • Do you know what type of wood the cabinets are?
  • Do you know if you’ll be replacing the hardware?
  • Do you know if the cabinets are currently painted or stained?

If you are unsure of the answer to these questions you can always give us a call (403) 613-1045 and we’ll be able to setup a time to come and look at your kitchen and give you an honest opinion on what should be done with the cabinets and at the same time can provide you with an estimate to do the work.

Just to touch on the questions above, if your cabinets are still in good shape, you don’t have broken doors, the boxes themselves aren’t broken, and they really only have knicks, dents, and scratches on them, then repainting them is generally the most economical option.   By replacing the hardware with a modern and stylish upgrade at the same time you’ll dramatically change the look of your kitchen and you’ll likely not even know the difference between your freshly painted cabinets versus going out and buying all new cabinetry, which as you know is going to be very expensive!

How Do Professionals Finish Kitchen Cabinets?

Many homeowners will try and repaint their kitchen cabinets on their own and there is nothing wrong with trying to do it yourself to save money.  The problem is many homeowners think it’s as simple as giving them a quick sanding, then just slapping on a coat of paint.  This will certainly work, but it’s going to look like you’ve done it yourself.  You’ll have an inconsistent finish, you might still visibly see some of the imperfections such as knicks, dents, or deep scratches, and you’ll probably be unhappy with the outcome considering the amount of work you put in.

Here’s What We Do

#1.  We start by inspecting your current cabinets and consulting with you on the color possibilities.  We’ll discuss any hardware upgrades as well.

#2.  We remove the cabinet doors and drawers and take them to our shop where they can be properly sanded.

#3.  We use a high quality wood filler to fill in any knicks, dents, or scratches so you have a seamless, unblemished finish.

#4.  We use a high quality primer and then finish with a couple coats of a top quality paint that will provide a durable finish that will resist knicks and chips.

#5.  When the cabinet doors and drawers are dry we bring them back to your home and install them along with your new hardware upgrades.

Will My Painted Cabinets Be Easy To Clean?

Yes!  With a fresh coat of paint and a seamless finish your cabinets will be easy for you to clean.  Grease, dust, and dirt will easily be wiped off with a clean, wet rag.  You can also use products such as a “magic eraser” to remove any stubborn stains.  Avoid using any cleaners that contain ammonia or other harsh chemicals as they could cause problems with the finish.
